Scope and controller
This Privacy Policy explains how Fold handles information when you use the Fold app, website, downloads, support, backups, exports, and optional provider-connected features. In this policy, "Fold," "we," and "us" mean the operator of the Fold app and website.
Fold is the controller for personal information it directly processes to provide the app, website, support, accounts, and Fold-operated services. Some optional features are provided by third parties you choose to connect, such as Apple, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or another AI provider. Their own privacy policies and terms apply to their processing.
Information Fold may handle
Fold stores the notes, folders, schemas, checklist items, reminders, images, rich text, settings, and export preferences you create in the app. If you choose account sign-in, Fold may also handle account identifiers needed to keep your session available.
- Note content includes structured schema values and the free-text writing page.
- Folder data includes names, groups, artwork choices, checklist mode, and sort preferences.
- Settings may include backup preferences, app appearance, AI provider configuration state, and onboarding choices.
- Support messages may include contact details and any screenshots, logs, or note excerpts you choose to send.
- Website requests may include basic technical information needed to load pages, such as IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, and timestamps in ordinary server logs.
- Website analytics may include page paths, section names, clicked link labels, viewport size, theme, referrer hostname, and timestamps. Fold does not use analytics cookies and respects Global Privacy Control / Do Not Track signals.
- If app analytics are enabled in a future build, Fold may receive app event names, screen names, app version, operating system version, device model, locale, timing values, and error labels. App analytics should not include note content.
Because Fold includes free-form notes, you may choose to store sensitive information in the app. You decide what to write, export, back up, or send to optional providers.
How information is used
Fold uses information to provide the features you choose, keep the app usable, respond to support requests, maintain security, fix bugs, comply with law, understand aggregate website usage, and improve the product.
We do not currently sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use note content to train Fold-operated advertising profiles. Fold does not use automated processing to make legal or similarly significant decisions about you.
Legal bases where required
Where GDPR, UK GDPR, or similar laws apply, Fold relies on the legal bases that fit the feature you use: performance of a contract to provide the app and account features, consent for optional actions such as provider-connected AI where required, legitimate interests for security, fraud prevention, support, product maintenance, and understanding basic website performance, and legal obligation when we must comply with law.
Local storage, accounts, and retention
Fold can be used in local-only mode. In that mode, note data is intended to stay on your device unless you export, back up, share, connect a provider, or otherwise move it. Deleting the app or resetting local data may remove locally stored content from that device, subject to your operating system backups and any files you exported elsewhere.
If account, cloud backup, or sync features are enabled, Fold may keep the information needed to operate those features for as long as your account or feature remains active, unless a shorter retention period is required or you ask us to delete eligible information.
AI providers
AI features are optional. When you use an AI action, the selected text, note context, prompt, or related metadata needed for that action may be sent to the provider you configure. Provider keys are designed to be stored locally in Keychain. Do not send API keys to Fold support.
Provider processing, logging, retention, model improvement, and deletion rules are controlled by the provider you select. Review provider settings before sending sensitive note content to any AI service.
Backups and exports
Fold supports encrypted backup bundles and export formats intended to help you move and recover your data. You are responsible for where exported files are saved and who can access them after they leave the app.
Your choices and rights
You can use local mode, export your data, restore from backups, delete local app data, remove provider keys, and choose whether to use optional AI features. If Fold maintains account records for you, you can contact us to request access, correction, deletion, export, or restriction of eligible personal information.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights, such as the right to know what categories of personal information are collected, correct or delete certain information, withdraw consent where applicable, and not be discriminated against for exercising privacy rights.
Children, security, and changes
Fold is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child provided personal information to Fold, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete eligible information.
Fold uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including local platform protections, Keychain storage for supported secrets, and encrypted backup options. No app, network, or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
We may update this Privacy Policy as Fold changes. If changes are material, we will make reasonable efforts to provide notice through the website, app, or other appropriate channels. The effective date below shows when this policy was last updated.
